The Advantage 96 water heater is a Non-Automatic Circulating Tank type unit with a dual heat-exchanger design.
A primary heat exchanger using a coil of finned copper tubing in a double row is operated in a normal, non-condensing mode. A secondary stainless steel heat exchanger is used to extract the maximum amount of heat from the exhaust stream. This second heat exchanger (economizer section ), is formed as a single coil to surround the inner heat exchanger and results in a very low jacket temperature. Condensate from the economizer section is drained by gravity into a lower pan of the heat exchanger section and is disposed of through a fitting in the exhaust ducting.
Flow rates through the two heat exchangers are controlled with a thermostatic mixing valve. Lower temperature water from the outlet of the cooler economizer is mixed with recycled flow from the copper heat exchanger to maintain non-condensing operating conditions in the primary heat exchanger. A bronze circulator pump is built into the unit with sufficient head to maintain proper running conditions while simultaneously circulating water to a separate storage tank.
The forced-draft combustion system utilizes a premixed burner. A flameholder-style cylindrical burner is used with the gas/air mixture set by fixed orifices. Ignition and flame safety is accomplished with a Hot Surface Ignition control. A blower is used to provide airflow.
The Advantage 96 water heater has been designed to use 3" diameter PVC, ABS, or CPVC schedule 40 pipe as the standard air intake and exhaust vent material. Side wall vent terminals are provided with the unit.
